The United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, on Tuesday
called on all extremist groups in Nigeria to cease their attacks, after
several people were killed in Borno State.
The Boko Haram sect had on August 11, burst into a mosque where
scores of people were praying and killed at least 44 people, the News
Agency of Nigeria reports.
Following the group’s havoc, the United States government offered a
seven million dollars reward for information that would lead to the
capture of Abubakar Shekau, leader of the sect.
“The Secretary-General strongly condemns the recent violent attacks
that have killed scores of civilians in the localities of Mafa and
Kondugo in Borno State,” his spokesperson, Martin Nesirky said in a
statement.
According to the statement, Ban called on all parties to resolve their differences through dialogue and other peaceful means.
“The Secretary-General reiterates his firm conviction that no
objective can be attained through such violence,” the statement added.
