The Rivers State Police Command Monday said it had arrested five
suspects in connection with the abduction of three members of the
National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) serving in the state.
The corps members, two males and one female, who were kidnapped on June
29 at Ogonokom in Abua/Odual Local Government Area of the state,
regained their freedom on Sunday.
The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Joseph Mbu, who spoke Monday at
the police headquarters in Port Harcourt, said the corps members serving
at Ogolokon community, where they were abducted, had been relocated to
Ominima, also in Abua/Odual area.
Mbu stated that the police decided to relocate the youths because of the vulnerable nature of the Corpers’ Lodge in Ogonokom.
He stated that the lodge was very close to mangrove and was too
vulnerable, adding that the security of occupants should have been
considered in the location of a residential quarter for the corps
members.
Meanwhile, an organisation, The Pilot Group, has called on security
operatives in the state to take steps to guarantee security of lives and
property.
In a statement issued Monday in Port Harcourt and signed by its
spokesman, Mr. Festus Egbe, the group said it was worried by the rising
incidence of kidnapping and shootings in Port Harcourt.
It called on security operatives to ensure the state did not return to the era when hoodlums literarily took charge.
It also called on the people of the state to be vigilant and report
suspicious persons to the police as part of efforts at building a
peaceful atmosphere.
The group condemned the clash of cult groups at Amadi-ama area of Port
Harcourt on June 28, which allegedly left one person dead, adding that
the people should not allow that happen again.
The statement also alleged that a faction of the Peoples Democratic
Party (PDP) was recruiting miscreants into its fold in readiness for
2015.
It appealed to youths to resist offers from the political class to
indulge in violent activities, saying; “We also wish to enjoin our
youths that they should resist being used by politicians.”
