Actress Dikeh risks 15 years jail



The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency on Friday said controversial Nigerian actress, Tonto Dikeh, risks a minimum of 15 years in jail for encouraging the consumption of hemp. Dikeh had on Friday posted photographs of a wrap of hemp and grains of the weed formed into the letters, ‘Happy birthday POKO.’ She also posted a photograph of herself and added the inscription, ‘Mi smoke ganja mi smoke weed while my hatez smoke ma gossip.’

15 Boko Haram suspects arrested in Lagos


About 15 suspected members of the Boko Haram sect have been arrested in Lagos by security agents.
They were arrested at various parts of the metropolis, with most of them arrested at Ijora Badia and Kotankowa areas, it was gathered.

Panic as more water is released from Cameroon dam

Panic gripped residents of Makurdi, Guma, Agatu, Gwer West and other areas affected by last year’s flooding in Benue State as the state government announced plans by Cameroonian authorities to start releasing water from Ladgo Dam.
The Executive Secretary of the state Emergency Agency (SEMA), Mr Adikpo Agbatse, had announced on the state radio station early Friday that the Cameroonian authorities would release  water from the dam in the morning  and enjoined the people in vulnerable areas to be on alert, particularly, when the volume of water on River Benue begin to rise.

Eagles’ players want Osaze back

Key players of Nigeria’s Super Eagles have declared that they would not mind having controversial West Bromwich Albion attacker, Peter Osaze Odemwingie back in the team.
Odemwingie last featured for Nigeria in a 2013 Nations Cup qualifying game in Kigali, Rwanda in February 2012.
Head coach of the Super Eagles, Stephen Keshi hinted in an interview this week that Odemwingie could get an unlikely recall to the national team.

Presidency defends prevention of Amaechi

The Presidency on Thursday defended  the prevention of Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State from exchanging pleasantries with President Goodluck Jonathan by a security operative during dinner at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Wednesday.
It said the  incident was purely a security issue that should not be politicised,especially by opposition political parties.

Mandela: Obama won’t visit him in hospital

United States President Barack Obama will not visit former South African President Nelson Mandela during his trip to the country.
Obama, who is on a seven-day African tour, is scheduled to arrive South Africa tomorrow, but will not visit Mandela in hospital, the South African government said Thursday.

Mandela: Supporters hold all-night vigil

The crowd of well-wishers outside former President Nelson Mandela’s Pretoria hospital continues to grow as the health condition of the global statesman is said to be improving but still in “critical condition.”
On Thursday, 15 buses filled with supporters arrived at the Mediclinic Heart Hospital, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.
Throughout the night, crowds of people from all over the country were singing and praying in spite of the bitterly cold winter weather.

Daily Times: Sept. 30 fixed for court ruling on Anosikes’ objection

A Federal High Court, Lagos, will on September 30, rule on an objection raised by the Anosike Brothers – Noel and Fidelis over Daily Times of Nigeria properties.
They were charged by the Federal Government with advance fee fraud and fraudulent conversion of DTN properties.

Daniel, 12 others suspended by Ogun PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party in Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun  State  has suspended  former Governor Gbenga Daniel for alleged romance with the Labour Party in the state.
Twelve other members of the PDP in the area – Idowu Osho,   Gbenga Sadiku,   Yetunde Majolagbe,  Mabawonju Shitta,  Ayantola Lawal,   Raufu Jinad, . Oguntade Adeleke,   Gbenga Buhari, Yinka Sotunde,   Gbenga Sokoya, Zainab Lawal and  Olu Osho- were also suspended   for the same   offence termed “anti-party activities.”

Britain reconsiders £3,000 Visa Bond

British Prime Minister David Cameron has halted the controversial plan by his country to demand a £3,000 bond from each visa applicant from “high risk countries”.

Remain in Kirikiri prison - Court orders Ajudua

A Lagos High Court in Ikeja has ordered the alleged fraud kingpin, Mr. Fred Ajidua, to remain in Kirikiri Prison till when the case against him is concluded.
Justice Olubunmi Oyewole had earlier ordered Ajudua to be remanded in prison when the accused appeared in court for the first time on June 11, 2013 after eight years of evading trial.
He had applied for fresh bail or alternatively, the restoration of the bail, which the court revoked after he consistently evaded trial.
But Oyewole ruled on Wednesday that the accused was not deserving of bail on the grounds that he “has not been alive to his responsibility of attending to his trial”.

Boko Haram hunters take over checkpoints

Hundreds of youths who launched a manhunt for insurgents in Maiduguri have taken over stop and search work from soldiers, suggesting that the volunteers are assuming more responsibilities in their efforts to help root out insurgency in Borno State.
Their involvement in search work is based on the belief that they would be able to identify insurgents faster and easier than the soldiers.

Kevin Rudd sworn in as Australian new PM


Rudd sworn in as Australian new PM 
Kevin Rudd has been sworn in as Prime Minister of Australia, a day after he ousted Julia Gillard as leader of the Labour Party, BBC reports.
Mr. Rudd took the oath at Government House in front of Governor-General Quentin Bryce.
