7 suspects arrested for operating illegal refinery in Ondo

Ondo State Commandant, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Mr Waheed Popoola  has announced the arrest of seven suspects  operating   illegal refinery and petroleum depot.

Popoola said this when he briefed newsmen on the activities of the state command of the NSCDC in Akure on Thursday and that the suspects were picked up at Iju Osun, Ore, Oniparaga and Onitea, all in Odigbo Local Government Area of the state.

The commandant said three trucks with registration No EKY 699 XH, XA 995 KMR and JJJ450 XA were recovered from the suspects.

Popoola said the command has since notified the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) of the development.

He added that the illegal depot and refinery had been destroyed while cars numbering up to 10 loaded with adulterated fuel were also recovered from the suspects. “At Oniparaga, on Lagos-Ore Road, we discovered some wells where fuel was being drawn like water from well.

“We are determined to rid the state of these saboteurs and as I speak to you, normal surveillance is going on in all these areas which are mostly riverside areas of the state,” he said.

The commandant, who took over the leadership of the command only seven months ago, wondered “why people keep engaging in this illegal business despite constant arrests and prosecutions”. (NAN)
