Fayemi, Speaker plead with striking teachers in Ekiti

Ekiti State Governor  Kayode Fayemi has again appealed to teachers in the state to end their strike.
Primary school teachers in the state are protesting against the  non-implementation of the 27.5 per cent  Teachers Peculiar Allowance.

The Deputy Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Mr. Tunji Orisalade, and the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties in the state, Mr. Tunji Ogunloba, also urged the striking teachers to accept the 15 per cent increment that the state government had offered to pay them.
Fayemi spoke in Ado Ekiti on Tuesday.
He said, “My own attitude is to continue to appeal to them because all of us are stakeholders. We are talking to them and we believe that good sense will prevail at the end.”
Fayemi further clarified that the ongoing recruitment of teachers was not targeted at retrenching anybody but to fill vacant teaching positions in the state.
He  explained that teachers in the state had enjoyed salary increment at least twice since he became governor, saying the gesture was to motivate them to put in their best.
The Deputy Speaker, in a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Taiwo  Oluwaleye,  advised the  teachers to see themselves as not only employees but also stakeholders in the state.
He said, “There  is need for sacrifices across board by all in order for the state  to move forward.”
Also, Ogunloba appealed to the teachers to accept the 15 per cent in the interest of the pupils.
